چکیده

Our paper addresses two questions on seasonal mortality: How do women and men differ with respect to seasonal fluctuations in mortality? How does seasonality in death change with age? The analysis is based on a sample of all Danes aged 50 and older on 1 April 1968 who were followed for 30 years. In contrast to previous studies we found remarkable differences between women and men in their seasonal mortality patterns. Men showed larger seasonal fluctuations than women indicating a higher susceptibility to environmental stressful periods. We found that seasonality increases with age. However, we discovered again a sex difference: women’s seasonality starts increasing at later ages than men’s. 1Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Konrad Zuse Str. 1, 18057 Rostock, Germany. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Taylor’s law (TL) typically describes a linear relationship between the logarithm of the variance and the logarithm of the mean of population densities. It has been verified for many non-human species in ecology, and recently, for Norway’s human population. In this article, we test TL for human mortality. METHOD We use death counts and exposures by single age (0 to 100)...

Lifespan Disparity as an Additional Indicator for Evaluating Mortality Forecasts

Evaluating the predictive ability of mortality forecasts is important yet difficult. Death rates and mean lifespan are basic life table functions typically used to analyze to what extent the forecasts deviate from their realized values. Although these parameters are useful for specifying precisely how mortality has been forecasted, they cannot be used to assess whether the underlying mortality ...
